In this picture above, you see an abandoned city in Pripyat, Ukraine. This city is no longer lived in due to high amounts of radiation in the atmosphere.
Pripyat city once housed the families of thousands of men and women working at the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
On the 26th of April in 1986, disaster struck the city when an explosion at the plant caused radiation to leak from its nuclear rector.
The people in the city had minutes before they had to evacuate the city when they found out that this explosion was actually very dangerous. Some did not even have a chance to get their personal belongings.

The damage to Reactor 4 following the explosions
Because of the wrong low readings, the reactor crew chief Alexander Akimov thought that the reactor was not damaged. Akimov stayed with his crew in the reactor building until morning, sending members of his crew to try to pump water into the reactor. None of them wore any protective gear. Most of them, including Akimov, died from radiation exposure within three weeks.
